All About Strip Seal Expansion Joint
Strip seal expansion joints are a mechanical device suitable for sealing an elongated gap between two adjacent sections of road plates, providing continuous support for vehicles passing through the gap so that the road sections can adapt to temperature changes.
A single strip of elastomer-neoprene rubber is attached to adjacent road sections on both sides of the span by heavy edge beams under a specially designed profile. This setup ensures effective sealing for road expansion joints, accommodating the movement and expansion of the road plates.
The dilation compound system consists of an elastomeric reinforcement that is mechanically fixed between two steel edges and provides a superior waterproof sealing system. The durable design of the strip seal compensator effectively absorbs heavy vehicle traffic loads while sealing bridge expansion joints and structures, accommodating movements ranging from 0 mm to 80 mm and 0 mm to 130 mm.
Strip seal compensators can be manufactured to adapt to different field configurations and multidirectional movements.
About Strip Seal Expansion Joints
These compensators are designed so that the neoprene gasket can be inserted before or after fixing the steel molds to the car body. Machined steel molds increase the sealing and reduce the manufacturing tolerance associated with the production of general steel molds.
-
The Strip Seal system is a special method used to seal expansion joints in bridges and other structures. These joints need to move to handle changes in temperature and other forces, and the Strip Seal system can manage movements of up to 125 mm.
-
This system is designed for roads and structures that see a lot of traffic. There are different types of Strip Seal systems, but they all share two main features: they are strongly anchored in place and they keep water out. This way, the seal can be made to fit perfectly with the road surface, helping it stay in good shape even with heavy traffic.
Features of Strip Seal Expansion Joint
-
Without damaging the structure and causing vibration, it allows the expansion/narrowing of the fixed ground space.
-
It ensures high driving comfort and Does not cause any inconvenience or danger to road users.
-
It withstands load on the road and includes dynamic shocks.
-
Motion-sensitive surfaces must be non-slip and non-polishing.
-
Ensure availability for easy inspection and maintenance, and all parts subject to wear and tear must be easily replaced.
Applications of Strip Seal Expansion Joint
-
Strip seal extensions work well on any kind of wide, steep, and curving bridge. They can also perform well on newly built bridges and bridges under construction, asphalt surfaces, and concrete bridge surfaces. It is also utilized on highways.
Strip Seal Expansion Joint Mechanism:
The main functional requirement for the joint is to provide movement with a very low resistance or no resistance at all. Evaluation of joint movement is the first step of the design. The most famous and by far the most significant movement that the Joint should perform is a linear motion, expressed by opening and closing the joint. Often the joint is exposed to rotational and transverse motion and off-plane vertical displacement.
Components of Strip Seal Expansion Joint:
The expansion joint of the foot consists of two edge beams with attachment points and a neoprene closed element that is securely attached to the edge beam housing, which ensures waterproofing of the joint. For optimal road surface performance, edge beams should not exceed 80mm. This ensures a smooth traffic area while accommodating the maximum shrinkage of the deck when the joint is fully extended.
The edge beams protect the concrete adjacent to the bridge deck from damage caused by vehicle collisions and use a solid anchor system to transfer the vehicle's load to the deck structure.
The main parts of the strip seal expansion joint are:
-
Seal Strip: Made of chloroprene, it offers high tear strength, resists oil and ozone, and fits snugly in the edge beam groove. It should be vulcanized in one operation.
Strip Seal Expansion Joint Material:
Strip seal expansion joints are made from neoprene for flexibility and sealing, and steel for structural strength and durability.
About Deevin Strip Seal expansion joints
The Deevin Seal joint comprises elastomeric sealing glands. It is mechanically locked between 2 edge beams designed to ensure the best performance. These joints are designed for use in vehicle bridge structures, support heavy loads, and can effectively accommodate multi-directional movements, including horizontal shifting, vertical deflection, and rotational movements.
The end beam is made of hot rolled steel according to ASTM a-36 or ASTM a-588 grade or equivalent. The minimum section thickness is 10.5 mm across the entire cross-section, exceeding Mort & h requirements.
Features of Deevin’s Product
The " V " shape seal allows unrestricted expansion joint movement and resists long-term fatigue due to its inherent flexibility. Strip seals are made of a specially designed elastomeric material that forms a gland, covering the gap in a deck joint. The gland is securely fitted into a pair of rolled or extruded metal shapes, which are then anchored to the edges of the deck slabs.
It is used for sealing expansion joints in concrete roads, as well as in heavy areas subject to high traffic and high speed in multi-story car parks, stadiums, and other concrete structures. The continuous elastic sealing element of the Divin Tape sealing system is designed for exceptional tightness and durability. Neoprene seals, known for their long-lasting properties, have proven effective for over 25 years.
High-performance neoprene seals are enclosed in steel profiles to provide a fully waterproof system. Elastic sealing arteries are available in two standard sizes with movement capacities from 0 to 80 millimeters and 0 to 130 millimeters. It is the most popular and acceptable common system among bridge consultants and engineers all over the world.

We are fully equipped with the necessary manpower, materials, tools, and equipment to handle both routine and specialized tasks. We have advanced labs for in-house testing.
Installation Process:
-
We determine the gap width for movement due to thermal effects, prestressing, shrinkage, and deformations, and then coordinate with the manufacturer to set the appropriate thickness based on installation temperature.
-
Immediately before laying the joint, the predefining will be inspected. Need to change in temperature, if the specified temperature of the structure is different from actual temperature. After adjustment, the clamp must be tightened again.
-
Lower the joint, level and align it, then weld the Anchor Loop to the reinforcing bar. Repeat this process on the other side, then release the brackets to allow structural movement.
-
It must have minimal shrinkage and be as strong as the superstructure, with at least 35 MPa strength. Proper compression and curing are crucial. Once the concrete hardens, the mobile installation bracket will be taken away.
-
Cut the neoprene strip seal to the required length, then use a crowbar to insert it between the edge beams for correct alignment. Ensure the seal's thick end fits snugly into the steel groove, securing it with the wedge effect.
